AIE Writing Task 3

Expository Writing Focus: Description

Prompt: Write a well-constructed paragraph that describes the experience of watching the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company perform. Incorporate references to the dance concepts we have been discussing with Meg, such as: time, space, negative space, levels, unison, non-unison, pathways, etc. You may speak about the performance in general or comment on a small part of it. Your writing should allow the reader to visualize the event.

Planning: Create a list of three adjectives that describe the experience. Try to use the resources to "bump-up" your vocab. Brainstorm what you remember from the performance: costumes, music, movements, energy, etc.

Key Components of a Good Response:

  • There is an awareness of audience (teacher, classmates, and community) and use proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • The paragraph is 6-8 sentences long, at least.
  • The paragraph allows the reader to visualize the performance
  • The paragraph uses interesting words that "bump up" their vocabulary and engage the reader. These words are IN ALL CAPS. You should include at least 2 "bumped-up" words.

  1. When the ellen sanopli dance company came to school i enjoyed it. My favorite dance was rising low i liked it because it spoke TONS of things to me. What I was thinking of during the performance was that women are not always treated fairly or equally then as the music went on the other women got up and started to dance with eachother and it made me think of teamwork. Also if women work togther we could get a little bit more respect. The dance also didnt make sense to me at the same time because at first the MAJORITY of the women were sitting there with sad faces in the chairs and the other lady was there dancing by herself and would always come back to the chairs as if the chairs were her PERCH. Also the lady was acting scared as she was dancing like somone was chaseing her or somthing. But that dance was my favorite because of what it described to me.

  3. Ellen Sinopli Dance

The Ellen Sinopli dancers came to dance in a performance for our 7th and 8th grade.
They performed three dances for us, one of the three was very slow and dramatic. it was called rise and low. There were five girls, four in chairs at first and one doing some sort of a solo. After her slow and dramatic solo the rest of the girls got up to put on there performance.

  4. The Ellen Sanopli Performance
When they started the PERFORMANCE Ellen Sanopli said there were three dances. One of these dances was called rising low. This dance told a story. There were 5 women all in simple dresses. 4 women were sitting in chairs in a corner in the beginning. First 1 of the 5 women was doing a solo dance she was very DRAMATIC. There expressions told what was happening. They did not really use much negative space. A lot of the time they were in UNION.

    1. The Ellen Sinopli dance company performed three dances for us on the stage. Each one was performed with PRECISION and we could tell that they had practiced for a long time to be in UNISON. The first one seemed to have more ENERGY and was more APPEALING to me for that reason. They were all good though. The second dance had a lot of EMOTION and it had a story to it. For the last dance they all wore similar costumes and they were all jumping around and using each others bodies.

  12. I liked one of the dances "rising low". It was very INSPIRATIONAL. I liked the pathways they used. The Costumes they wore in other dances were colorful but these ones were DULL. The way they moved was INCREDIBLE. The dance told a story. It was VERY IMOTIONAL. I liked the dance it was my favorite.

  14. Ellen Sinopli was a WIERD performance. They came during 3rd and 4th set and there was 5 girls and 1 boy. There costumes were DIFFERENT. People in the crowd were laughing at the dancers because of the dance and the outfits. I thought it was RUDE and DISRESPECFUL. They must of practice over and over again to get it to be like like.

  15. The Ellen Sinoplie performance was a great EXPERIENCE. It was fun to watch them dance and move around the stage. I think my favorite dance was called Rising Low. The COMPOSER said she based it off of a sad country song she heard, which played in the background. It was about five women, four of which sat in chairs during the first part, because it was a solo. They were supposed to be strong and RESILIENT during hard times, and they really CONVEYED it in the way they moved and acted. It was really good and I enjoyed it.

I thought that the dance was really good. My favorite one was The last one. I forget what the song and the name was but they were dressed in FLUENT light SHADED colors. The danced like they were in cloud and I thought that they did a great job.
